Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the city whose shape resembles the outlines of meridionally drawn-out Sakhalin Island itself, occupies a narrow strip of land wedged between a mountain group and a flood plain.
The city structure stretches along the railroad and the mainline and has an orthogonal street network, which is not typical of Russian cities and which has residential districts and industrial areas stringed along its longitudinal axis.
This monotonous structure is cut by small rivers and brooks – tributaries of the main Susuya River – that run down from the mountains. Our concept proposes that the riverbeds and valleys be developed into linear recreation areas that would cut the body of the city, infusing it with the fresh and healthy mountain air. Each of the city districts is to be framed by rivers.
