Volhonka is a historical area around Volhonka Street bounded by Znamenka street, Gogolevsky Boulevard and the Moskva River, having the unique specific character and genetically connected with the whole history of Moscow. Today, in spite of the deep history, central location and immediate vicinity to the Moscow Kremlin, the significance of this area for the city remains underestimated. Systematic research and designing of Volhonka territory is capable to launch the revitalization process, namely, a high-quality evolutionary renewal of urban environment as the comprehensive whole, including both material transformation of the environment, and its cultural filling. In this regard Volhonka is capable to become a model project of revitalization of other central areas of the city having similar specific character.

In a basis of project-oriented research the system of the approaches connected with specifics of historic center of the city, urged to reveal problems, problems of development of the territory and to find means of their decision was put. A research objective — to develop design model on the basis of which it is possible to build conclusions, to propose solutions.
